DAY 33
When we woke up, it was already hot. The forecast was for it to be 104 degrees. It is ironic that it is happening in South Dakota where everyone complains about how cold it always it. Our first stop of the day was a 1950s diner which was in an acutal train. We fueled up and then hit the 1880s Town in Midland, SD. This is a town made up of original buildings from the 1880s which they moved from different places to create the town.
Since it was supposed to be hot, we went to the costume place first where we got to pick out a costume that we would wear while we were there. It was really fun getting dressed up in old fashioned clothes. Maya picked out a simple white dress, James had on some fun chaps and cowboy hat (along with several other layers) and I picked out a black dress. A really nice woman helped us get outfitted complete with hats, gloves, shoes, chokers and she even helped me get some more pickers out of my hand.
With our new get-ups on, we really felt like we were living in the olden days. We checked out old carriages, trains, a printing press, homesteads, stores, saloons, a school house, a doctor's office, and more. Maya was quite uncomfortable in her costume (from the shoes to the heat), so she wanted to change back into her regular clothes. I wanted to keep mine on a little longer, but it just made sense to change all together. After we took off our costumes, we got to get sasparilla drinks which were cold and hot the spot! After the cold drinks, we took a buggy ride, pulled by mules with one of the "McNasty Brothers" out to a homestead and to see the long horned cattle. James and I both got to "drive" which was fun.
It was a pretty cool experience, all in all. Since, our plan was to get going east, we hit the road for Worthington, MN where we sent the night.
